Ganeshdas bilasiram
It all began with Ganeshdas Bilasiram. Our family lived in Lakshmangarh and there was abject poverty there. Ganeshdas first came to Assam in the 1870s with his maternal uncle to set up a trading business. Assam was very under developed, even for that time. Ganeshdas’s health suffered due to tough geography, weather and availability of food. He returned to Lakshmangarh after 5-6 years. Then, Bilasiram came to Assam and, through his perseverance, setup a trading and manufacturing business that was one of the most successful in Assam. At the peak, Ganeshdas Bilasiram had 5 rice and oil mills (located in Tezpur, Halem, Narayanpur, Laluk and Bijotighat) and 28 trading posts. Goods would be transported on the Brahmaputra river since there were no roads. You can see some of artifacts in the photos section.
